The Power of Our Thoughts

October 30, 2024 By Jimelle Carlson

Hello Foundations Families and Friends,

This week’s growth mindset quote is…

Watch your thoughts, for they become words.
Watch your words, for they become actions.
Watch your actions, for they become habits.
Watch your habits, for they become your character.
Watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.
– Lao Tzu

One of the reasons why we spend time at school every day writing affirmation statements is because of the fact that our thoughts ultimately become our destiny.

The challenging thing about our thought life is that many of the thoughts we have are not even true. Fear, pain, anxiety, and past experiences can cause us to falsely assume things about other people, and to think false things about ourselves. And because our thoughts impact the words that come out of our mouths and the choices that we make each day, it is important that we are careful about the thoughts we choose to entertain.

Learning to take our negative and false thoughts captive, and replacing them with truthful and life building thoughts, is a game changer. It can make the difference between being a person who allows discouragement and setbacks to cause them to give up on their goals, or being a person who is able to persevere to achieve their dreams. It can also make the difference between being a person who has a tendency to emotionally react to other people’s behaviors, or being a person who is able to build others up even when they are struggling.

This week I want to encourage you to pay attention to the thoughts that you are allowing to run through your mind and how those thoughts are impacting your words, your actions, your habits, your character…and ultimately your destiny. It might just be that all that is standing between you and your goals is a shift in your thought life.
