Happy Friday Foundations Families and Friends!
Hi Mrs. C.
How are you doing? We sure do miss you guys. I wanted to reach out and send you DJs first report card from his school. He is doing amazing. I thought you might like to see that all the time and effort you and your teachers pour into these kids really really pays off. Thank you again for everything you did to help DJ. We are eternally grateful.
Lissa
DJ was diagnosed with dyslexia when he was 7 years old. In response to his diagnosis, his parents did their best to pursue education options that would help him work through his learning challenges, including working with a private tutor who specializes in dyslexia, and enrolling him at Prentice, a school specifically for students with dyslexia. After years of not seeing the growth they were hoping for their son, they began to research other education options. In August 2018, DJ entered the Foundations program for 5th grade. Initial testing indicated that DJ was below grade level in reading, language, writing, and math. He was assigned daily cognitive and academic lessons specifically designed to strengthen the areas of his brain that were contributing to his learning challenges. After just 18 months in the Foundations program, DJ’s reading scores jumped 4 grade levels, and his Language scores increased 5 grade levels. Over time, as DJ worked diligently on his cognitive lessons, his writing and math scores began to increase as well. During his third year in Foundations, DJ was re-assessed for his IEP through the public school district, and his parents were told that he showed minimal, to no, signs of dyslexia, and that his academic scores coincided with his Foundations test scores. DJ has now graduated from Foundations and is thriving in a mainstream school setting. It was an absolute blessing to watch DJ experience so much growth, both academically and cognitively, and an even bigger blessing to watch his self-confidence blossom as a result.
We are eager to hear about the great things that DJ and our other Foundations graduates will do in the years ahead, and how their stories will inspire so many others who struggle with learning challenges. If you find yourself in a season of discouragement, please know that you are not alone – DJ’s parents, and so many other families, have shared in the ups and downs of raising a child with learning challenges. While there are days of celebration and joy, there can also be those days when fear sets in and it’s hard to hold on to hope…but do not lose hope! Whether your kiddo is one of those students who experiences rapid growth like DJ, or like some of our other students who need a couple more years to reach their full potential, growth is possible.
