Foundations and Dyslexia
I am happy to share with you about one of the many dyslexia success stories that we have experienced in the Foundations program.
DJ was diagnosed with dyslexia when he was 7 years old. In response to his diagnosis, his parents did their best to pursue education options that would help him work through his learning challenges, including working with a private tutor who specializes in dyslexia, and enrolling him at Prentice, a school specifically for students with dyslexia.
In August 2018, DJ entered the Foundations program for 5th grade. Initial testing indicated that DJ was below grade level in reading, language, writing, and math. DJ was assigned daily cognitive and academic lessons specifically designed to strengthen the areas of his brain that were contributing to his learning challenges. After just 18 months in the Foundations program, DJ’s reading scores jumped 4 grade levels, and his Language scores increased 5 grade levels. He is now above grade level in reading, and approaching grade level in all other subjects. With the rapid progress we have seen, we anticipate him being ready to transition into all mainstream classes in the near future.
DJ was recently re-assessed for his IEP through the public school district, and his parents were told that DJ now shows minimal, to no, signs of dyslexia at this point, and that his academic scores coincide with his Foundations testing scores.
It has been an absolute blessing to watch DJ grow these past few years, both academically and cognitively, and to see his self-confidence blossom as a result. We are eager to see the great things DJ will do in the years ahead at school and in his future career, and how his story will inspire others who struggle with learning challenges.
